Fare Thee Well, Blogspot?

One post and I'm abandoning my blog.  Why?  I'm defecting to WordPress!  It's terribly elegant.  Find my musings at http://musicalfiction.wordpress.com

Happy Writing,

UPDATE: I have since return to Blogspot, as Google has overhauled the user interface to stifle strong gusts of 2003.  And unlike WordPress, Blogspot is completely free, a difference I didn't realize until after I had tinkered with WordPress.

Beginnings and Sunshine

Three Ways to Get Something Done

There is not a better place to begin, I'm told, than the beginning. It's a cliché, but who denies that there’s a temptation to plan out a project without actually doing it? Lofty dreams of writing a book, a new IM client, a blog—lost in unclaimed daydreams. Daydreaming under the sunlight is one of my favorite activities, but sunlight alone won’t get the job done.

How do you muster that final ounce of motivation?

1. Start
I read this over and over and over and over again.  And guess what?  It's true.  Just start the project and—bam—you’re already past the first and perhaps greatest hurdle: moving out of the dream phase and into the action phase.

2. Become accountable
Tell someone about what you’re doing. Write about it in your journal. Make yourself guilty when you skip work on whatever it is. Make it a part of your life.

3. Soak up advice
Pick up a book on your area of expertise. Ask friends for advice. Follow some inspiring bloggers on Twitter.

Twitter has provided unexpected help for me as a writer. If you too want to write, consider following @JeffGoins or @AdviceToWriters for a healthy kick in the pants. Without this particular social medium, this blog would probably not exist, much less this post.

Enjoy the sunny days of summer. Don’t let the craziness of life distract you from indulging in some healthy daydreaming—or from coaxing those dreams into reality.
